Pipeline Cleaning

Pipeline Cleaning Program

An effective pipeline cleaning operation protects asset integrity and allows operators to conduct ILI (in-line inspection) activities. These ILI runs are crucial to collecting important data to analyze the condition of the pipeline, but they cannot be properly performed if the pipeline has significant debris that may interfere with the sensors. A combination of chemical and mechanical cleaning is most effective at clearing out these harmful deposits.

Mechanical cleaning pushes out debris and breaks it into smaller pieces; however, when combined with chemicals, it further breaks down this debris and allows for effective removal from the line. That’s why incorporating both mechanical and chemical cleaning is overall more effective for pipeline cleaning.

To get started with your pipeline cleaning program, lean on our team of skilled pigging technicians and our analysis capabilities to find a perfect-fit solution. Using our in-house lab resources, our technicians determine the best suite of cleaning agents necessary to break down and mobilize identified deposits.

Online vs. Offline Custom Cleaning

Chemical cleanings can be performed either online or offline and are effective even in liquid lines and gathering lines.

  • Offline cleaning is performed when the line section is shut down and product is not flowing.
  • Online cleaning distributes cleaning chemicals through the line without stopping the flow. A separator is then used to separate the cleaning chemicals from the pipe contents, which are then emptied into a frac tank.

The Effectiveness of Online Chemical Cleaning

N-SPEC’s online chemical cleaning process begins with injecting cleaning solution into the pipeline. Once the solution is spread throughout the pipeline surface, it permeates the debris present, breaking down the chemical bonds of the deposits. The debris becomes suspended in the cleaning solution and is carried forward through the line with the mechanical pig. After cleaning, the liquids and solids are separated into a frac tank while the gas stream continues through the pipeline. This process allows the pipeline to remain online and operational throughout the entire cleaning.

Remember, a cleaner pipeline translates into a more efficient pipeline, resulting in enhanced product delivery and increased savings for the operator.

When used in conjunction with mechanical pigging, operators have realized efficiency improvements as high as 28%.
