Fluid Separation

Coastal Chemical provides a full suite of phase separation technologies designed to improve oil quality, water, and gas separation across production and processing systems. Our lineup is engineered to improve separation efficiency and protect downstream equipment. Whether dealing with tight emulsions, persistent foam, or poor water quality, our customized chemical programs help ensure smoother operations.

Demulsifiers/Desalters

Demulsifiers are specialty chemicals used to break oil/water emulsions, allowing for effective separation of crude oil from produced water. In many production environments, oil and water don’t naturally separate due to emulsifying agents such as asphaltenes, resins, or fine solids. Demulsifiers disrupt these stable emulsions, enabling clean phase separation.

Demulsifier selection is best performed on live crude oil; therefore, the selection process must be performed in the field and is generally performed using the “bottle test” method.

Bottle Test Method

A bottle test is a small-scale lab procedure used to determine which demulsifier (and how much of it) works best to separate oil and water in a sample of emulsified crude or waste oil. It helps predict how the chemical will perform in the field without the cost or risk of full-scale testing.

  1. Collect a Clean Sample
  2. Pour and Heat
  3. Check the Baseline
  4. Add the Chemical and Shake
  5. Let It Sit
  6. Watch the Separation
  7. Time to Separate
  8. Fine-Tune the Best One

Foam Control

Coastal Chemical has formulated silicone copolymers and non-silicon polymers into products that prevent foam formation (Antifoam) and products that eliminate foam that has already formed (Defoamer). These materials effectively reduce foam in hydrocarbon processes, gas processing equipment, glycol dehydration, and amine gas processing plants. These products also effectively lower foam in oil separators, downhole pumps, and LACT units.

Foamers

The Well Foam product suite includes both single-component foamers and foamer packages that contain both scale inhibitors and corrosion inhibitors. The foamers and foamer packages have been formulated to unload gas wells over a wide temperature and TDS range. Certain foamer and foamer packages are formulated to be highly tolerant of hydrocarbons. Both high-temperature and low-temperature products are available. Many of our high-temperature products have been tested at temperatures up to 425°F (218.51°C).

CAP-Guard Certified

For applications using capillary or umbilical strings, several of our foamer products and packages have been tested and certified under our CAP-Guard program to ensure safe, effective performance in these specialized injection systems. The certification includes:

  • Capillary stability test
  • Thermal cycle stability test
  • Physical Property Analysis
  • Chemical Compatibility
  • Static HT Capillary compatibility

Water Clarifiers

Water clarifiers are chemical additives used in oil and gas production to improve the separation and quality of produced water by helping remove fine oil droplets, suspended solids, and other contaminants. They are essential for cleaning up water before it’s either reinjected, treated further, or disposed.

By improving the clarity of the produced water and accelerating the separation of oil and solids, oil quality and the longevity of system assets improve.
